50 Years, 1 Birthday Card, and a Huntsville Reunion

What began as a simple birthday card exchange between two cousins has grown into a tradition spanning more than five decades.

In 1974, David Nillson received a birthday card from his cousin Amy Uptain with a playful note: save this card and return it to me on my birthday. David followed the instructions the following year, and the back-and-forth exchange continued year after year.

Tradition Almost Interrupted

Earlier this year, the decades-long ritual nearly came to an abrupt halt when the card was left behind at a Cheesecake Factory in Huntsville. Fortunately, staff members kept the card safe. The restaurant’s manager reached out on social media to help locate the family, and within days the card was returned to Amy.

A Family Keepsake

The card is filled with messages from both cousins over the years, documenting a unique family connection that persisted through moves, growing families, and changing lives. “It’s something that just naturally became part of our lives,” David said.

With the card back in their possession, the cousins plan to continue the annual exchange, preserving a tradition that highlights the sentimental value of family memories.
