$450K accessible playground coming to Joe Wheeler State Park

A new state-of-the-art playground designed for accessibility will soon be added to Joe Wheeler State Park in Rogersville, bringing a fresh amenity to one of the Tennessee Valley’s most popular destinations.

Funding and Community Support

The playground project carries a total cost of nearly $450,000, with almost half of that already raised. Major contributions include $100,000 from the Daniel Foundation, $50,000 from the Thompson Foundation, and $50,000 from the Alabama State Parks Foundation’s unrestricted funds.

Matthew Capps, Director of Alabama State Parks, expressed gratitude for the support: “We can’t thank these partners enough for their generosity and commitment to providing a first-class experience for every visitor.”

Fundraising Efforts Continue

The Alabama State Parks Foundation is now expanding its fundraising efforts to bring the playground project to life. Public donations can be made online, and the Foundation is actively seeking additional corporate and individual partners, especially from the Shoals region, according to Alex McCrary, president of the Foundation’s board.

Ongoing Upgrades Across State Parks

The playground is part of broader enhancements across Alabama’s State Parks, including:

  • A new lodge at Cheaha State Park
  • Campground expansion at Gulf State Park and Meaher State Park
  • Renovation at Lake Lurleen State Park
  • Updated playground at Chewacla State Park

“The Foundation helps fill gaps and elevate projects, ensuring our State Parks are better than ever,” McCrary said. “Every gift makes a difference, and contributions from the Thompson and Daniel Foundations are excellent examples of that support.”
