$40M Huntsville hotel set for late summer completion

The Marriott Autograph Collection Trilogy hotel across from the Von Braun Center is on track for completion by late summer.

Extended Deadline for Completion

At its Feb. 12 meeting, the Huntsville Downtown Redevelopment Authority approved an extended deadline for the Monroe Street project, pushing the new completion date to Aug. 31. Developers informed the authority that the hotel’s Starbucks is close to receiving its certificate of occupancy.

Project leaders attributed the construction delay to a design change. The COVID-19 pandemic also caused setbacks, but the delay allowed the project to expand.

Expanded Design and Features

Initially approved in March 2019, the hotel was planned as a six-story, 187-room facility. However, the project has since grown to eight floors with over 200 rooms. The $40 million development will include a rooftop bar overlooking Big Spring Park, along with two full-service restaurants and conference and banquet space. The Starbucks inside the hotel is among the largest in Alabama.

Developed by Ascent Hospitality of Buford, Ga., the city sold 0.734 acres of land for $1.6 million in 2020. The site was formerly part of the original Monroe Street parking garage.

Downtown Huntsville’s Hotel Growth

The Autograph Trilogy is part of a growing hotel presence in downtown Huntsville. Since March 2019, three hotels have opened in the district, including the AC Hotel by Marriott on Williams Street, Jefferson 106, a Curio by Hilton, on Jefferson Street, and Hampton Inn at Monroe Street and Clinton Avenue. Future plans include a hotel within the Front Row development at Monroe and Clinton Avenue. Another hotel, a Moxy adjacent to AC Hotel, is under construction as part of the third phase of CityCentre.

City officials have worked for years to increase downtown hotel capacity to support larger conferences at the Von Braun Center. The newly rebuilt parking garage, which wraps around portions of the Autograph Trilogy, includes designated guest parking for both the hotel and the Hampton Inn.
