3 new public art installations approved for Downtown Huntsville

According to online reports, three new pieces of public art are set to be installed in downtown Huntsville, with designs inspired by the city’s entertainment history and cultural roots.

Art Project Approved Near Von Braun Center

The Huntsville City Council has approved a $1.5 million agreement with the Arts Council to design and install three art pieces, along with decorative pavement art, at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and Monroe Street.

City officials say the artwork will highlight the Von Braun Center’s long-standing role as an entertainment hub while also recognizing the history of the site, which once housed the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. The art is planned as part of the broader streetscape surrounding the Front Row development now under construction across from the VBC.

Tied to Front Row and Streetscape Improvements

Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis said the funding for the artwork was included in the Clinton Avenue streetscape project approved several years ago. The timing aligns with nearby projects including Front Row, Mars Music Hall, and Rhythm on Monroe.

Council President Jennie Robinson noted that tax revenue generated by Front Row construction is expected to offset the cost of the art installation.

According to city estimates, nearly $1 million in tax revenue from construction materials has already been collected, with totals expected to exceed the contract amount as Phase One nears completion.

What’s Ahead for the Front Row Development

Developers aim to receive a certificate of occupancy for the first phase of Front Row by late May or early June, with a second building planned closer to the city’s Pedestrian Access and Redevelopment Corridor.

Once complete, Front Row will include 545 residential units, approximately 36,000 square feet of Class-A office space, and 47,000 square feet of retail space featuring dining, entertainment, and commercial offerings. City officials estimate total private investment across all phases of the project could approach $850 million.
