New plant to relieve strain on North Alabama City’s sewer system

A new wastewater treatment facility is set to transform Owens Cross Roads by replacing the city’s outdated sewer infrastructure. State and local officials attended a groundbreaking event, highlighting the plant’s potential to reduce Huntsville’s infrastructure burden.

Addressing capacity issues and stormwater infiltration

The city’s 40-year-old sewer system has struggled with stormwater infiltration and lacks sufficient capacity to serve the community’s current population and businesses. With 60% of the city’s sewage currently pumped into Huntsville’s system under a 2019 agreement, this arrangement will end upon the plant’s completion, according to Mayor Tony Craig.

Project funding and sustainable growth potential

Funded by a $7.3 million grant from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and $3 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) funding, this project is one of many addressing Alabama’s aging water systems. State Rep. Ritchie Whorton highlighted that the new plant will not only resolve immediate issues but will also support future growth and development in Owens Cross Roads.
