As Huntsville’s population continues to surge, the city’s rental housing market is racing to keep up. According to a report from AL.com, a study by Point2Homes and YardiMatrix found that the Huntsville metro area has nearly 2,400 build-to-rent homes currently in development.

The study ranked Huntsville 10th in the nation for build-to-rent housing growth. If compared as a standalone state, the metro area would rank 12th, surpassing entire states like Colorado and New York. Alabama as a whole placed 8th nationally, with approximately 3,200 build-to-rent homes under construction—most of them concentrated in the Huntsville region.
Huntsville and Madison lead the state’s growth
Huntsville proper accounts for 1,219 of these new homes, while neighboring Madison adds another 918 units to the mix. The study focused on single-family rental homes within communities containing at least 50 units, a segment of the market that is expanding rapidly.
Once the 3,200 new homes statewide are completed, Alabama’s build-to-rent supply is set to nearly double, reinforcing Huntsville’s role as a driving force in the state’s rental housing expansion.
