Huntsville adjusts sanitation rates to guarantee optimal service

The City of Huntsville operates 25 daily sanitation routes, servicing over 70,000 households with automated trucks and boom trucks to handle garbage, yard debris, and curbside items. Currently, residents pay $16.50 per month for these services, but a new ordinance proposes rate increases.

Proposed Rate Increases

Starting in 2025, the monthly fee will rise to $21.50, with an additional increase to $24.50 by 2027, representing the first price adjustment since 2010. Along with regular garbage collection, excessive bulk collection rates will also see an uptick.

Why the Increase?

According to Public Works Director Chris McNeese, these rate increases are necessary due to rising operational costs and ensure continued quality service for all residents.

Special Services for Residents with Medical Needs

The city offers “off the street” services for those with medical needs, which involve bringing garbage carts to and from the road for collection. Huntsville’s sanitation department remains committed to maintaining high service standards while adapting to economic challenges.
