Gov. Ivey grants over $16 million to North Alabama agencies

Governor Kay Ivey recently announced over $16 million in grants to support North Alabama community agencies in assisting low-income families with home energy costs. The funding is part of a more significant $44.5 million allocation to 18 community agencies statewide to help households manage heating expenses during the winter and cooling costs in the summer.

Addressing critical needs for low-income families

“Some families face tough choices between paying for utilities and other essentials like medicine and groceries,” said Gov. Ivey. “These funds provide temporary relief to safeguard health and welfare, especially during extreme weather seasons.”

How the program works

The grants are administered through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), with local agencies managing applications from needy residents. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) oversees the program in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell emphasized the importance of these funds in meeting the ongoing demand for energy assistance across the state.
