Toyota denies viral claim about Alabama plant moving to Canada

A viral social media post claiming Toyota is moving its Alabama plant to Canada has been debunked.

Toyota Denies Plant Move

Toyota’s joint manufacturing plant in Huntsville, built with Mazda, opened in September 2021 and represents a $2.3 billion investment. The facility produced its first vehicle, the Toyota Corolla Cross, in September 2021.

The plant, along with Toyota’s engine plant in Huntsville—which employs over 2,000 people—remains fully operational.

Michael Bouliane, spokesperson for Toyota Canada, confirmed through The Canadian Press that the claims circulating online are false.

Viral Spread and Misinformation

The false post appeared Feb. 19, stating, “Toyota just pulled the plug on their $9 billion plant in Alabama and gave it to Canada.”

Despite the account having only 404 followers, the post amassed more than 46,000 likes and spread widely across X, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn. Google’s AI Overview even amplified the story temporarily.

Wendy Manton, Google spokesperson, noted that such issues can occur when high-quality information on a topic is scarce, and the company uses these cases to improve its AI overviews.
