Monte Sano trail revived by Eagle Scouts

A historic Monte Sano hiking trail is making a comeback thanks to the work of local Eagle Scouts, according to online reports.

Historic Trail Returns to Monte Sano

The Huntsville Spacewalk Trail, first created in the 1960s, is now being revived at the South Monte Sano Trailhead. For years, large portions of the trail became inaccessible due to nearby development. As a result, the once-popular route faded from use.
However, recent efforts have brought new life to the trail, giving hikers another reason to explore Monte Sano.

Eagle Scouts Lead Restoration Effort

Eagle Scout Lana Lien led the project to restore and expand the trail. Her troop worked alongside Burritt on the Mountain and the Land Trust of North Alabama to complete the effort.

Because of their work, the trail now stretches roughly 16.5 miles in a loop. It offers a unique experience for advanced hikers, with some sections presenting a real challenge.

Opening Event Set for April

Organizers plan a ceremonial “stick cutting” to mark the trail’s return. The event will take place Friday, April 3 at 10 a.m. at the South Monte Sano Trailhead.

Therefore, hikers will soon have the chance to explore this restored piece of Huntsville history. Officials encourage the community to come out, celebrate, and experience the trail firsthand.
