Huntsville men invited to free Prostate screening clinic

Men in the Huntsville area will have an opportunity to receive a free prostate cancer screening next month during a community health event at the Madison County Health Department.

Free Prostate Screenings Scheduled for July 14

The Madison County Health Department will host complimentary prostate screenings on Tuesday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its location on Max Luther Drive Northwest.

According to reports, no appointment is required, and each screening is expected to take about 10 minutes to complete. The event is being offered in partnership with the Urology Health Foundation to encourage early detection and increase awareness about prostate cancer.

Early Detection Can Save Lives

Health experts emphasize that prostate cancer remains one of the leading health concerns for men in the United States. According to the Urology Health Foundation, prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among American men.

The foundation also notes that age and race are among the strongest risk factors for developing the disease. African American men face a higher risk and are encouraged to discuss screening options with their healthcare providers.

According to reports, Dr. Thomas Moody with the Urology Health Foundation said prostate cancer can often be successfully treated—and in many cases cured—when it is detected early through routine screenings.

New Alabama Law Expands Insurance Coverage

The free screening event comes just months after Alabama enacted legislation aimed at improving access to prostate cancer screenings.

According to online reports, Governor Kay Ivey signed a bill into law in February requiring health insurance companies to provide coverage for prostate examinations, helping reduce financial barriers for eligible patients across the state.

The Madison County Health Department is located at 301 Max Luther Drive NW in Huntsville. Residents seeking additional information about the July 14 screening event can contact the department directly at (256) 539-3711.
