A historic landmark in downtown Huntsville is receiving new funding to support preservation efforts and expand community programming. The investment will help ensure Harrison Brothers Hardware continues serving both residents and visitors for years to come.
State Grant Supports Historic Harrison Brothers Hardware
The Alabama Historical Commission awarded the Historic Huntsville Foundation a $75,000 grant through the 2026 Historic Sites Grant Program.
The funding will support preservation work at the Harrison Brothers Hardware building, which dates back to 1901. In addition, the project will help improve the visitor experience while protecting one of Huntsville’s best-known historic destinations.
Improvements Will Preserve History and Expand Programs
The grant will fund upgrades to the building’s electrical and HVAC systems. It will also help preserve historic artifacts and memorabilia displayed throughout the store.
Furthermore, the Historic Huntsville Foundation plans to expand educational exhibits and create more flexible space for community events, public programs, and other gatherings.
Harrison Brothers Hardware welcomed more than 30,000 visitors in 2025, making it a popular stop for both locals and tourists exploring downtown Huntsville.
A Downtown Landmark With a Lasting Legacy
Harrison Brothers Hardware first opened as a family-owned business in 1879 and operated for more than a century before the Historic Huntsville Foundation acquired the property in 1984.
Today, the nonprofit preserves the historic building, operates the retail store, and shares the site’s history through exhibits and educational programming.
The latest grant will help protect this important piece of Huntsville’s heritage while creating new opportunities for the community to learn about the city’s past and enjoy one of its most recognizable historic landmarks.
