AeroVironment announces $20M expansion in Huntsville facility

A major defense technology expansion is set to strengthen Huntsville’s role in national security manufacturing, according to online reports.

AeroVironment Announces $20M Huntsville Facility Expansion

Defense technology company AeroVironment is investing $20.2 million to expand its Huntsville operations with a 24,000-square-foot addition. The project will support increased production of next-generation counter-drone missile systems and advanced defense technologies.

The expanded facility will focus on system integration, manufacturing, and production of the company’s Freedom Eagle-1 program. As a result, it is expected to improve production speed and support U.S. military demand for advanced air defense systems.

Company leaders said the expansion strengthens Huntsville’s position within the Army’s air and missile defense ecosystem. In addition, it allows closer coordination with defense partners and faster development cycles.

Expansion Supports Missile Defense Production and Military Demand

The facility will help scale production of Low-Rate Initial Production systems and prepare for full-rate manufacturing in the future. Therefore, the site is expected to play a key role in accelerating delivery timelines for defense programs.

Officials said the upgrade is designed to meet growing operational needs from the U.S. Army and combatant commands. It also aligns with broader efforts to increase domestic manufacturing capacity for critical defense systems.

Huntsville Continues Growth as Defense Hub

Huntsville’s defense sector continues to expand alongside other major investments in aerospace and military technology. In addition, nearby federal and contractor facilities contribute to a growing ecosystem centered around Redstone Arsenal.

Company leadership noted that similar expansions in other cities reflect a wider strategy to scale production and create high-wage jobs. Overall, the Huntsville project reinforces the region’s long-term role in advanced defense manufacturing.
