Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences opens new lab

The Huntsville Regional Laboratory and Medical Facility collaborates with law enforcement across 22 North Alabama counties. It analyzes evidence related to drugs, DNA, and violent crime cases.

Addressing capacity challenges

The previous facility could no longer handle the growing workload. Angelo Della Manna, Director of the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, explained, “We had long outgrown our capacity there.” In response, the state legislature approved $11 million in 2020 to construct a new lab. This modern building is double the size of Huntsville’s former facility, originally built in the 1960s.

The critical role of forensic testing

Forensic testing is vital to the justice system, and the demand continues to grow. Governor Kay Ivey praised the team, stating, “The skills of Alabama’s forensic staff have been put to work in performing timely expert analysis.” Madison County District Attorney Rob Broussard emphasized the importance of scientific clarity in courtrooms. He noted, “Science enters the courtroom and provides clarity, whether proving guilt or exonerating the accused.”

Enhancing efficiency with modern technology

The lab’s advanced technology now allows faster evidence testing. For instance, DNA analysis can be completed in about 90 days. Manna highlighted the impact of timely results. Families of victims and those falsely accused benefit from faster resolutions, which help the justice system proceed more efficiently.

This state-of-the-art facility marks a significant step forward. It ensures that forensic experts can meet increasing demands while delivering critical results with greater speed and accuracy.
