Huntsville’s WLRH makes big changes

Huntsville’s public radio station is introducing a new programming lineup focused on local content. According to online reports, WLRH will increase its locally produced programming to 72% of its weekly schedule beginning July 27.

More local news and original programming

WLRH previously devoted about 32% of its weekly schedule to local programming. Under the new lineup, nearly three-quarters of its content will be produced or curated locally.

The station will also launch a new weekday evening news program called “ICYMI” (In Case You Missed It). The 30-minute broadcast will air at 5 p.m. and recap the day’s top local stories for afternoon commuters.

Changes follow departure from NPR

WLRH revised its programming after ending its NPR affiliation in September 2025. According to online reports, the station’s parent organization, Alabama Public Television, faced significant federal funding reductions, making it more difficult to continue carrying NPR programming.

Since then, WLRH says its audience has grown, with the station climbing in local Nielsen rankings. At the same time, membership donations initially declined, although recent financial reports show those donations have started to recover while support from local business underwriting has increased.

New music lineup and expanded local focus

In addition to expanding local news coverage, WLRH will introduce a new Adult Album Alternative music block on weekday evenings. The programming will feature a mix of alternative rock, acoustic folk, and other genres selected by local DJs.

Several existing local programs will also move to new weekday evening time slots as part of the updated schedule.

Station leaders say the changes are designed to create a more consistent listening experience while continuing to strengthen WLRH’s focus on serving the Tennessee Valley with locally produced content.
