Task force to develop community energy resource plan for Huntsville

Huntsville is set to launch an Energy Task Force to create a Community Energy Resource Plan (CERP), aiming to shape the city’s long-term energy strategy. During its recent meeting, the Huntsville City Council approved a resolution to move forward with the initiative.

Huntsville to establish energy task force for future planning

City officials noted that Huntsville’s rapidly evolving energy needs prompted the collaboration between the City of Huntsville and Huntsville Utilities. This task force will adopt a “forward-looking approach to energy planning,” focusing on future power demands, identifying opportunities, and examining Huntsville Utilities’ role within the TVA system.

“As our community grows, we must proactively address our energy needs. This task force will explore every option and approach to ensure a sustainable and resilient energy future for our customers and the City of Huntsville,” said Wes Kelly, CEO of Huntsville Utilities.

Key Focus Areas

The task force will work with consultants to address critical topics, including:

Fundamentals of Huntsville Utilities and TVA within a changing energy landscape
Economic development and community growth
Demand response and energy efficiency programs
Transmission and distribution Smart Grid solutions
Local generation opportunities
Legal and governance considerations

“Huntsville’s growth is driven by energy, and we want to be certain we are set up for success in the 21st century,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “With energy demand growing exponentially, we’re looking for dynamic energy solutions.”
