Mardi Gras at The Camp

Mardi Gras at The Camp

Hey Huntsville! Are you looking for somewhere to celebrate Mardi Gras that’s a little closer to home? Look no further than The Camp at Mid-City.

The Camp is offering Mardi Gras-themed nights between February second and the fourteenth, though times vary on the dates that the celebrations are being held.

Mardi Gras at The Camp: The Experience

If you are planning on attending the Mardi Gras celebration at the camp, know that it isn’t like the typical New Orleans Mardi Gras. If you are looking for something a little more ‘party-like’ and ‘wild’ then you may want to look into other celebrations.

Mardi Gras at The Camp was very low-key.

This could have been because we went on a Wednesday. There is no good way to predict the crowd for these types of events. When we went, however, it was very calm. There weren’t too many people in attendance, and those who were were friendly but mostly kept to themselves.

The decorations were the highlight of the event. The Camp was lit up in purple, yellow, and green lights. The interior was decorated in a way that really evoked the feeling of Mardi Gras without being too overbearing. The decorations were quirky and fun, with many decorative skeletons littered around doing some mundane things in their Mardi Gras wear.

Mardi Gras Food

Mardi Gras is most well known for its indulgences, as it is traditionally celebrated as a ‘last hoorah’ of sorts before the season of Lent.

The Camp offered a selection of traditional New Orleans-themed dishes, as well as some New Orleans-themed dishes with a bit of a twist. They offered a few sweets, like King Cake (by the slice or the whole cake), beignets, and a host of savory items. For the less adventurous eaters, they also had chicken fingers and a burger.

We were able to try the beignets, and they were really good! They arrived at our table decorated in purple, yellow, and green sugar, and they were warm and tasty.

Mardi Gras Activity

On the night we attended, the main event was a trivia game. It was general trivia, so the questions were varied in a way that allowed almost anyone to play. The trivia host was fun and upbeat, and the patrons enjoyed playing the game.

What You Should Know

Is it Family Friendly?

Though I can’t guarantee what the crowd is like on the weekends, on the day we attended, I would be more than happy to call the event family-friendly. It was an upbeat event, with food, music, and trivia that was, to me, perfectly appropriate for kids. (but take this with a grain of salt, as the crowd has a lot to do with whether something is family-friendly or not).

How Does Ordering Food/Drinks Work?

To purchase food, you need to be able to scan a QR code and use a website. It was a fairly simple process. I simply used my phone’s camera to scan the code on the table, and then I looked at the menu, ordered, and paid on my phone. In essence, to get food, you will need a cell phone that can connect to the internet, a credit card, or another similar payment method.

What About the Weather

The event is in early February, so weather is definitely a concern. The Camp had plenty of heaters around, so the cool air did not affect us terribly (though I would keep an eye on children because there is a risk that curious fingers could be burned). There is, however, very minimal seating that is covered in case of rain.

Would I say the event I attended was similar to any Mardi Gras celebration? No. Would I say that it was still enjoyable and worth my time and money? Yes. If you are looking for a Mardi Gras celebration that is more low-key and family-friendly, look no further than The Camp. If you are looking for something a little less family-friendly, try visiting closer to Mardi Gras or perhaps on a weekend.
