A new veterans cemetery is coming to northern Huntsville with the help of an $18 million grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.
Cemetery will serve more than 16,000 veterans
The new cemetery will provide burial services for more than 16,000 veterans and their families across North Alabama. The grounds will include an administration building, maintenance building, committal service shelter and assembly area.
Plans include 543 above-ground burial vaults, 144 traditional gravesites, 999 in-ground cremains gravesites and 600 columbarium niches.
Construction will include supporting infrastructure
The $18 million grant will cover more than burial spaces. Funding will also support the cemetery’s entry feature, internal roadways, landscaping, irrigation, site furnishings, equipment and other infrastructure needed for the property.
The project is part of the VA’s State Cemetery Grants Program, which helps states develop and expand veterans cemeteries so more former service members and their families can access burial benefits closer to home.
Spanish Fort cemetery also receiving funding
Another Alabama veterans cemetery will benefit from the same grant program. The Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort will receive $283,200 for an expansion.
The project will add 2,050 in-ground cremains gravesites, along with hardscape, landscaping, irrigation and other supporting infrastructure.
Nationwide, 44,705 veterans and their family members were buried at VA grant-funded cemeteries in 2025. Since 1980, the VA has awarded more than $1 billion through 525 grants supporting 125 veterans cemeteries across the country.
