According to online reports, Huntsville’s music industry contributes $278.2 million in economic output and supports 3,047 jobs, underscoring the growing role music plays in the city’s economy.
New audit highlights industry growth
The 2026 Huntsville Music Audit, conducted by global music consultancy Sound Diplomacy, found that the music industry now accounts for 2.8% of Huntsville’s workforce. The report also shows the sector has grown significantly since the city’s first music audit in 2018.
City leaders credit that growth to years of investment in entertainment venues, music programs, and the creation of the Huntsville Music Office. As a result, officials say Huntsville has become a more attractive destination for musicians, visitors, and professionals considering a move to the Rocket City.
Mayor Tommy Battle said a strong music scene helps the city compete for talent while supporting tourism and economic development.
Entertainment venues fuel economic impact
The audit found that Huntsville’s major entertainment venues continue to generate substantial economic activity. Concerts at the Von Braun Center produced $37.5 million in economic impact during 2023, generated $5.3 million in local tax revenue, and supported 3,590 jobs.
Likewise, The Orion Amphitheater has become a major economic driver since opening in 2022. Between May 2022 and December 2023, the venue generated $85.2 million in economic output and supported 624 full-time and part-time jobs. In addition, spending by visitors traveling from outside the area contributed $76.8 million to the local economy.
The report also highlighted the 2024 South Star Music Festival, which generated $24.3 million in economic activity despite being shortened by severe weather.
What’s next for Huntsville’s music scene?
The audit includes recommendations to help Huntsville continue expanding its music industry through future investments, partnerships, and long-term planning. Furthermore, city officials believe continued support for live music and creative businesses will strengthen the local economy and attract more national touring acts.
Although organizers have not announced whether the South Star Music Festival will return, Huntsville leaders say the city’s music industry continues to gain momentum. They hope the latest findings will guide future decisions as Huntsville works to establish itself as a leading music destination in the Southeast.
