The Best High Schools Huntsville Alabama

Huntsville Private High Schools

Local private schools experiencing increased enrollment post-COVID According to a March 2024 article from CATO Institute, research has shown that 46% of private schools have experienced significant increases in enrollment. 

 

 

After the challenges COVID presented for public schools with ample restrictions, many families moved their children to private institutions with more freedom. Even after COVID, these schools are going strong. The average ACT score in the  State of Alabama in 2023 was 19.5. 

Randolph High School

Huntsville boasts several quality private high schools, both religious and secular. Randolph is among the most prestigious and a good fit for those without a religious background who would enjoy a private school education.

 

 

In the picturesque Jones Valley, Randolph’s high school campus is surrounded by lush greenery from Jones Farm and houses an impressive columned, flanked building worthy of university prestige. Their class of 2021 statistics speak for the program, with 48% of students scoring 30 or higher on the ACT.

Westminster Christian Academy

Huntsville also provides quality religious education with Westminster Christian and St. John Paul II Catholic High School. Westminster Christian Academy is a Presbyterian day school founded in 1964. 

 

 

A branch of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Westminster offers K-12 education with a biblical background. Niche.com awarded Westminster as the #1 Best Christian High School in the Huntsville Area. Westminster is home to 920 students who enjoy the sprawling campus located near Providence.

 

 

Their 2021 senior statistics also exceeded the state average, with a  26.5 average composite score.

St. John Paul II Catholic High School

Drive a short way over near Indian Creek Trail to Catholic High, which has 355 students in grades 9-12 and a close average ACT score of 25.6. Catholic High is a great option for families, with a 10:1 student ratio and $12.7 million earned in merit-based collegiate scholarships.

Public Offerings: The Big Three. U.S. News &World Report ranks  New Century Tech Demo High  School, Huntsville High School, and Virgil Grissom High School as the top 3 best schools in  Huntsville City Rankings, respectively.

New Century is a magnet school located on the same campus as Lee High School. Ranked number one in the city and number four in the state, It offers its students a specialized stem-based curriculum to prepare them for college and beyond.

The oldest institution on this list, Huntsville High, has provided education to Huntsville residents for over 100 years. Located near Huntsville’s historic downtown district, Huntsville High provides quality academics to students in the area.

 

 

In 2024, two of their students held the distinguished title of Presidential Scholar Candidates, and one was recognized as a National Merit Commended Student for academic success.

Grissom High School

Grisson High School serves the South Huntsville community.  Students who are musically inclined enjoy this school’s superior band qualifications. Their program offers two marching bands, two symphonic bands, a concert band, two jazz ensembles, and multiple chamber ensembles. Additionally, the school won All-State Band and District Honor Band in the 2020-2021 season.

Impressed with Huntsville City schools? Madison City is no exception. James Clemens and Bob Jones are the top contenders for Madison residents. Located a short five miles from each other, these schools are ranked as #8 and #11, respectively, in Alabama High Schools by U.S. News & World Report.

Bob Jones has been awarded the prestigious National Blue Ribbon  Award from the U.S. Department of Education twice, in 1993 and 2020. They were nominated for the category of Exemplary High Performing Schools.

For those interested in artistic pursuits, in 2023 James Clemens students won many awards competing in the state-level Walter Trumbauer Theatre Festival, including Stage Management, Musical Comedy, Acting Dramatic, and Pantomime.
